Mirror Blue on Kindle, and Other Stuff

Breaking news:  my novel Mirror Blue is available from Amazon in Kindle format!  So if you have a Kindle, go have a look-see.

Gardening update:  Our second crop of corn is doing well.  Who knows if we’ll get an ear or two before the first hard frost, but it’s an interesting experiment.  We usually don’t get a first hard frost here in East TN until early November, so who knows?

Here’s what the corn stalks look like now.  Do you think a second crop of ears are in our future for this year?  Only time can tell…

Writing update:  I’m working, working, working on my outline for Heart’s Chalice, getting ready for NaNoWriMo to start on November 1.  And I’m making tremendous progress.  What a difference a year can make, what a difference perspective can make!  I’ve never had a story fall together the way this one is doing.  So much fun — I’m so sparky I feel like a firecracker!  You know, the big ones that shower colored sparks all over the sky.  I can’t wait to actually start writing the thing.

Before NaNo starts, when I can tear myself away from Heart’s Chalice, I’ll dive into revisions to Patchwork Stained Glass and get it submission-ready.  It isn’t that I mind revisions.  I enjoy them.  But they are a decided second to the surge of pure, raw creativity I’m experiencing with Heart’s Chalice, my new novel-to-be.

Here’s a poetic peek into the mind of Laurel, the protagonist of Heart’s Chalice:

As the moon softly glows
Amidst the gentle fire of twilight
Peace grows in the heart
Which swells at the sight

A woman stands bathed in the beams
Of shining white moonlight
And in this twilight hour
She finds strength to take the Night.

And for you ailorophiles, here’s what I believe to be the most adorable picture yet of my glamorous white kitty, Marilyn MonREOW. Isn’t she a cutie-patootie?

Long Time, No Post

I’ve been slacking on the blog.  Why?  In a word:  BUSY.  Here’s a rundown of what I’ve been up to:

1.  Working on Patchwork Stained Glass, my novel-in-progress.  I’m moving along at a pretty good clip, considering all the demands on my time this summer.  And Heart’s Chalice, a subsequent novel-in-progress, is still on the agenda, but before I dive back into Heart’s Chalice, I’m going to work on another project, a super-nifty idea for a novel that lit up like the proverbial light bulb over my head.  I’m going to be mysterious about that one for a while (rubbing hands together, bwahahahaha).  But I will say this:  it’ll be significantly different — both in genre and in tone — from anything I’ve written thus far.

2.  Doing what I can to promote Mirror Blue, my published novel.  Online promotion is a challenge.  There are so many things an author can do online to promote a novel, but how much of it helps to reach readers?  Many promotional activities I’ve participated in have been writers talking to writers, with only a few readers involved.  Sure, it’s fun for us writers to talk amongst ourselves, but it doesn’t do much to help bring our books to the attention of readers.  No question about it, promoting fiction is tough.

But I’m hanging in there, and I’m keeping my mind open to all kinds of new possibilities.  And I’m thinking not only about Mirror Blue but the long haul to come:  Patchwork Stained Glass, the novel which will follow PSG (title TBA), Heart’s Chalice, etc.

3.  Gardening.  Picking cabbage, peppers, zucchini and squash.  The zucchini and squash are pretty much played out, but we’re still getting cabbage, peppers, corn and plenty of tomatoes.  Here’s a picture of our recently picked tomatoes.  Gotta make more pasta sauce, and tomato casserole is on the menu this week.

additional_tomatoes

We still have multiple hills of potatoes.  Dug three hills today, and here is the result.  This week, we’ll be eating potato lasagna, mashed potatoes, and baked potatoes.

bucket_of_potatoes

Our sunflowers have gotten huge, and pretty soon, we’ll have sunflower seeds — good snacking for both birds and for humans.

And the other day, I picked a hat full of wild blackberries for blackberry cobbler.  The cobbler turned out scrumptious!

4.  Hiking.  Busy as I am, I can’t stay off the trail, nor would I want to.  Being in the mountains helps keep me centered, no matter what might else be going on around me or inside me.  Peace — I crave peace in my life, and spending time in the mountains brings me peace.

To my delight, I found a Mushroomopolis on the mountain — a huge colony of mushrooms in a faerie ring around a tree, and climbing up it, too!  Such ambitious mushrooms, don’t you think?  They want to see through the forest canopy to the sky.

New ghost flowers are unfurling:

No matter how much time I spend on the mountain, the forest never fails to hearten and inspire me.  On every hike, there’s something new to see:  flowers, fresh plays of light and shadow on the trail, fascinating fungi, creatures large (rarely) and small (frequently).  Here is an assortment of pictures, accompanied by quotes which speak to me:

“Come forth into the light of things, let nature be your teacher.” ~William Wordsworth

“Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn’t people feel as free to delight in whatever remains to them?” ~Rose Kennedy

“Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.”
~Kahlil Gibran

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

5.  And just because it’s been a while, I’d like to share with you pictures of my Ballicai (otherwise known as cats):  four of the brightest lights of my life.  They make me laugh, they warm my heart, and their uncomplicated, unconditional love comforts me when I’m feeling down.

Here’s Brainball, my Lion Boy Alpha Cat:

Here’s little Dorydoo, kitty genius extraordinaire, with her aDORYble profile:

Here’s lovebug Marilyn MonREOW, a.k.a. my Lap Fungus (in this picture, she’s headed for my lap as I sit at my computer):

And here’s mischievous, playful, and very handsome MaoMao (also known as Monkey Mao because he’s always getting into everything):

My sweet Ballicai remind me that joy can be found in every moment of every day, if you know where to look for it.

“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.” ~George Bernard Shaw

Produce! And a Wonderful Review

There are over fifty tomatoes in my house. Skeptical? Here ya go. Count ‘em. They’re on the stove:

They’re on top of the microwave:

And they’re all over the kitchen counter:

Guess what we’re eating in the TL household this week. Tomato casserole. Potato lasagna with tomatoes in it. Stir fry with tomatoes as one of the ingredients. Sliced tomatoes with meals and as snacks. And I’m going to make oodles of salsa and pasta sauce.

Speaking of potatoes, I dug up a hill of potatoes today. Perfect for mashed potatoes with supper. Potato lasagna requires that I dig up two hills of potatoes. Digging up potatoes is fun — like digging for treasure and always finding it.

And good news — we harvested our first ears of corn today! And another squash, some onions, and yet another tomato, one which I’d overlooked when I went tomato-picking this morning.

corn_and_stuff2

Hanging from our tomato plants are scores of green tomatoes that have yet to ripen. I see copious tomato sauce and salsa, etc., in our future. Singing to the tune of “Yes! We Have No Bananas”: Yes!  We have some tomatoes… we have some tomatoes today!

Gardening ROCKS. Well, you know what I mean. We’re not growing rocks (though I had to wonder about that at first, as many rocks as we had to pull and carry out of our garden when we began – the soil here is good but plenty rocky).  Gardening is fun, healthy, and it’s saving us a bundle at the grocery store each week.

We’re also growing eye candy (and bird food, also known as sunflower seeds). Our first sunflower has fully bloomed:

garden2_sunflower

And the rest of them are on their way:

garden3_sunflower_row

And speaking of sunniness, I’m honored and humbled: singer-songwriter Jannie Funster, a ray of sunshine in her own right, posted a glowing review of my novel Mirror Blue on her blog. Thanks a thousand times over, Jannie!

Black Lyon Author Chat at Coffee Time Romance

I’m participating in a Black Lyon Author Chat at Coffee Time Romance today (Tues., July 21).  It starts at 9 PM EST/8 PM CST/6 PM PST, and I’ll be discussing my novel Mirror Blue. Check it out — it’ll be fun! Here’s the chat room link.  I’ll open comments to this post when the chat starts, and guess what:  the third (non-spam) commenter will win a copy of Mirror Blue in e-book (.pdf) format.

All right, comments on this post are open! :)

Fabulous Fungi — and Mountain Laurel, Too

This is definitely the Summer of Fungi. On every hike, I find a new specimen. I don’t know the correct names for them, so I make up names. Here, for instance, is the UFO Mushroom:

hike5_ufo_mushroom1

And here’s the Golf Ball Mushroom. Doesn’t it look like a golf ball on a tee? I bet you thought you had to go to a golf course to tee off. Nope.  You can do it on the mountain! ;)

Check this out: Golf Ball Mushrooms growing out of a hillside.

And now I’d like to introduce you to the Big Splat Mushroom.

hike11_big_splat_mushroom

Viewed from the side, though, it looks less like a big splat than like an umbrella.

hike15_big_splat_mushroom_side_view

And oh, the mountain laurel is gorgeous this time of year. More and more of it is blooming, and much of it is in full blossom.

hike8_laurel

Laurel is one of my favorite trees on the mountain. Or is it a shrub? It has characteristics of both, so perhaps I should call it a shree. Or a tub.

Whichever or whatever, it’s one of the hardiest species of vegetation on the mountain. It’s evergreen. Its leaves are thick and tough, and its wood is nearly hard as granite. Laurel is a survivor. Yet every summer, it produces lovely, delicate blossoms that look like wedding bouquets.

Garden Goodness

Our green beans are coming on like crazy — hanging in wads.  And they need to be picked every two to three days.

green_bean_plants

In thirty minutes, hubby and I picked this three gallon bucket of beans.

Here they are again, from the top.

We broke and strung beans until our fingers were sore.  But it will be well-worth it.

Check it out:  our first ripe tomato!

With many more to come.

Our corn stalks are now much taller than me…

…and they’re growing ears!

And last but not least, here are two of our baby cantaloupes…

On my latest hike, I discovered more funky fungus.  I’m calling this stuff Scrambled Egg Fungus:

And the forest is looking summertime gorgeous:

Good news:  the official book trailer for my novel Mirror Blue will be available soon from Black Lyon Publishing.  Watch this space for updates.  And my dear friend Dorothy made a trailer for Mirror Blue which she is featuring in her sidebar.  Go check it out.

In other writing news, I’m rocking and rolling on Patchwork Stained Glass, my novel-in-progress.  Finished another chapter last night.  Yippee!
