Here’s a friend I met on a recent hike. His name is Gilbert (my friend Dorothy named him after she saw his picture). Don’t you think he looks like he’s smiling?

I continue to find funky and fascinating fungi on the mountain. 2009 is, without a doubt, the Summer of Fungi. The Summer of Fun Fungi, *grin.* Perhaps I should publish my pictures in a book which would be entitled Fungi I Have Known (complete with my made-up names, of course).
Here’s the Pancake on Moss Mushroom. All it needs is butter and syrup (KIDDING!):

Whoops, apparently I interrupted a Faerie pine cone tea party:

Cool Beans, the Flying Saucer Mushroom has landed:

And here are a pair of Helmet Mushrooms that appear to be quite good buddies:

And last but not least, the Purple Haze Shroom, which is the first purple mushroom I’ve found on the mountain:

Those are fun fungi. Gilbert is wonderful. I finally got to see some frogs in the wild yesterday. Made my day.
Thanks, Leah!
Isn’t Gilbert a cutiepie? I just adore frogs. So glad you got to see some in the wild yesterday!
As usual, great pics, Thomma. While I am not the biggest fan of frogs, I do think mushrooms are pretty cool.
Do you think Gilbert is one of the tadpoles you saved? The fanciful funghi are fantastical.
Thanks, Jaimey! I’m a critter person — I don’t think there’s any critter I dislike except for cockroaches and earwigs. And oh, the mushrooms — because of all the rain we’re getting, we have a huge variety of fungi on the mountain this summer.
Hi, Paul! You know what, I had the same thought about Gilbert, that perhaps he is one of those sweet little taddies. And oh, the cool fungi — I discover new fungi on every hike I take. I’ve become a regular fungologist!
another lovely selection of fungi and Gilbert is lovely…
Thanks, Crafty Green Poet! Gilbert sure is a cutie.
My favorite is the Pancake Mushroom. And the Helmet Mushrooms. And…okay, I like them all. Gilbert is adorable! What a great name. He actually looks like a Gilbert.
Thanks, Denise! Dorothy comes up with such adorable names for the critters I see on hikes. And those mushrooms — they’re so much fun. I see new kinds on every hike!
Awww- looks like a froggie Gilbert posed pretty just to say thanks!
Think I suggested writing a children’s book of named fungi characters awhile back there in a many-fungi-pictures post once- (the one with “fried eggs fungi”). “Fungi have Fun” maybe?
Great collection you have going here!
Are yes – wondrous fungi; and all frogs look like they are smiling – that is why we love them so much. We have heaps of frogs at my place in Hervey Bay, Australia. We put out a bug catcher at night and about 15 frogs come along, sit in front of it (vying for a spot) and proceed to eat bugs all night long. We call it the Frog Fast Food Factory (photos on blog). We also get heaps of frogs in our bromiliads – because of the water.
Hi, Snaggle! Thanks, and oh my goodness, what an adorable idea, writing a children’s book with fungi as characters! That’s an idea I’ll have to file away. Hadn’t thought much about writing children’s books, but I might just try it someday.
Hi, Gabrielle! Thank you so much for visiting and commenting. What a cool thing, the bug catcher to attract frogs! I’d love to see fifteen frogs all at once, in a bug-eating contest. That’s such a cute mental image! I’m off at once to check out your blog — sounds like my kind of place.
